The Academy of Aphasia was founded in 1962 and held its first meeting in Chicago in 1963. From an initial group of 9 charter members, the Academy has grown to include more than 180 members from both clinical and research fields and has attracted significant national and international interest.
I have always been deeply impressed with the potential of the aphasic patient for illuminating our understanding of the relationship between language and 'thought' and the derangement of each.

The Academy holds an annual scientific meeting where members and non-members may present their research in a number of areas relating to aphasia. Topics typically include (but are certainly not limited to):
- Bilingualism
- Speech Perception & Spoken Production
- Reading & Writing
- Syntactic, Morphological, and Phonological Processing
- Word Retrieval
- Localization of cognitive functons in the brain
